Professional Background & Credentials
Alana Stevenson is a Professional Dog and Cat Behavior Specialist, Dog Trainer, and Dog and Cat Massage Therapist. Alana is the author of The Right Way the First Time: Teaching Your Dog Kindly and Humanely (2007). Alana has a MS in Biology (with a focus in education) and is a professional member of the International Institute for Applied Companion Animal Behavior and the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. She is Certified (CDBC) by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. She helps people resolve their dog's and cat's behavior problems humanely and effectively.
Alana's behavior modification approaches and techniques are gentle, fun, and effective. They are based on how animals learn and on sound scientific principles. She does not use punishments, force, or negative reinforcement when working with dogs or cats to resolve behavioral problems.
Alana has been a supporter of animal advocacy for over 18 years. Her advocacy work has included aiding in the rescue of abused and injured animals, educating people on the humane treatment of animals, initiating a campaign to relocate an abused monkey to an animal sanctuary (his story can be viewed in the Fall 2004 issue of Monkey Business — scroll down to page 14), designing and organizing the display of a vegetarian billboard that reached 40,000 people a day, and researching animal abuse and how it relates to violent crimes against people. Her research was used as part of a curriculum to teach law enforcement officers in Illinois.
Alana has appeared on Chronicle TV, and her articles have been featured in Northern Virginia Dog and the UK-based K9 Magazine.
Alana Stevenson's goals are to teach people how to treat their animals with respect, clear communication, positive training, and compassion, to teach people how to resolve their dog's or cat's behavioral problems humanely, and to prevent animals from being abandoned and killed at shelters.
